The Healing Power of Bali

I decided to go to Bali after a really rough year.  I had been through the ringer emotionally and was looking to escape, to experience something life-altering, to feel peace and beauty.  I needed to have an adventure.  I quickly made the decision to participate in a yoga and meditation retreat. I had always wanted to deepen my yoga practice and engage in the personal and spiritual development facilitated by such retreats.  After researching options, I came across one that advertised the perfect escape.  It promised yoga and meditation in a beautiful setting, gourmet meals, tantalizing spa treatments, cultural experiences and outings, and all for a very reasonable price. It sounded like just what I wanted and needed.

Indeed, it was what I needed…and so much more.  My experience at the retreat and in Bali fulfilled a longing, a hunger that I didn’t even know I had.  I got to experience a place where time seemed to stand still, where the physical beauty of the land was so breathtaking it felt surreal, where the air was thick and fragrant and charged with energy, and where the people smiled as if they knew a secret about life that I was still trying to figure out.  [Read more...]

Exotic Yoga, Spa, Cooking, Culture Tour

Indo Discovery Travel is developing new itineraries that are quite a departure from the existing Heritage tours that you have been reading about and seeing on the website for some time. Our knowledge of Bali and our desire for a more balanced life made this decision quite a natural progression. So now, in addition to tours based on heritage we are now building up a catalogue of tours and retreats that are designed to showcase exotic locations around the world. We will focus on culture, cuisine and cooking, yoga, and spas. The base idea behind these trips is to deliver a means of escape into a world of relaxation and beauty coupled with the opportunity to indulge in both spiritual and physical exercise. [Read more...]

Lembongan and Leatherjackets

LembonganContinued from Paradise Lembongan

Having a bicycle delivered to your bungalow is just part of the hospitality you will find on Lembongan and with the arrival of mine I was all set to explore the island. My instructions were to head “that way”, said with a half hearted directional head tilt delivered by my hotel manager; the understated energy a result of life in paradise. My only other instruction was to turn right when I came to the road. Not much need for google maps on Lembongan.

I had decided my first stop would be Mushroom Bay. I had passed by it on the boat on my way over so knew approximately where it was however this did not interfere at all with my ability to get lost on a tiny, single road island.  Instead I ended up at one of the most remarkable beaches I have ever come across…the kind of beach you would envision in your dreams. Paradise Lembongan

It was a decade ago and I remember the excitement I felt as I began to architect what I believed to be the best life possible. I was going to study computer networking and databases…yes, for real! In my mind this would eventually lead me to a position where I could work from anywhere in the world. Of course that in turn led me to see myself on a beach in the tropics holding down the cyber-fort with my laptop.

My first position in corporate America was with a law firm for whom any chance of working remotely was dashed. Next up was a consulting company. Working from a remote location was standard practice however being outside the continental US borders was not. Kansas, no problem, Milwaukee, good as gold. I left the consulting firm and started Indo Discovery Travel. My vision came true when sitting in a lounge chair out front of the Scooby Doo cafe on the harbor side of Lembongan Island off the east coast of Bali. White sand at my feet, crystal clear water lapping against the shore inches from where I lay, moored fishing boats retired for the day, the sun slowly sinking over the Bali filled horizon, and me…sitting in quiet contentment tapping away thoughts on my keyboard. I could think of nothing more perfect in that moment. [Read more...]

Little Beach with a Big Heart

Some of you will have heard me talk about Padang Bai and its trifector of unique beaches all tucked neatly into their own distinct coves. Spend some time here and you will see that departing is without question one of the more difficult decisions you will make. The strong hold this tiny village has on anyone who dares to give it a chance and stay a couple of nights is almost magnetic; in an absolutely tangible way.

To think this village is tiny because no-one knows of it would be a mistake. [Read more...]

The Dutch Port on Bali

Today visitors to Bali fly in and out of Denpasar or ferry to and from the island of Java to the west or Lombok to the east. Most will be content to restrict themselves to the southern part of the island taking in the chaos of Kuta and culture of Ubud. Others will venture further south to the Ulawatu point and take in some of the islands famous surfing beaches.

To the very north lies Bali’s second largest city and its previously long standing capital. The city of Singaraja established its port in 1849 and from [Read more...]

Trekking Around Ubud

On first impression you may think the cultural and artist capital of Bali is small and consists of just a few intersecting streets full of shops and restaurants. Over the years Ubud has grown along with its reputation. The culture and traditions have remained as has the art, music, and dance. Ubud is a town of royalty and they even speak in a version of Balinese that commands respect. [Read more...]

Kintamani and Besakih

Standing on the edge of a crater this size is nothing short of overwhelming.  As you look from one side to the other the sheer size of the volcano that once existed here is hard to imagine. Today, the area of Kintamani with its panoramic views of the young Mt. Batur and Lake Batur are highlights that any tourist to Bali cannot miss.

Mount Batur sits inside the crater of its predecessor and lapping at its base is Bali’s largest lake; Lake Batur.  The kidney bean shaped lake [Read more...]

Eco-Cycling through Rice Fields

There are only a few ways to get right out into rural Bali by your own steam. You can walk of course and a day of hiking is a great way to experince parts of the island and come across quiet experiences you may otherwise miss as you zip by on a motorcycle or in a car or a bus. A hike through the trails that thread themselves through and around Ubud is a great way to spend a day; return to Ubud and let yourself melt into a tropical spa. Not much is more pleasing to the mind and soul than a day of exercise followed up by an evening of luxury and pampering.

Another way… [Read more...]
